Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) is a producer-owned company, working in partnership with industry and government to achieve a profitable and sustainable red meat and livestock industry. MLA has the unique responsibility of providing marketing and research services to its 43,500 livestock producer members and the broader red meat industry to help them meet community and consumer expectations.

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) also operates the NLIS database on behalf of SAFEMEAT, the industry/government partnership responsible for red meat safety and hygiene. NLIS is Australia's system for livestock identification and traceability. It is a permanent whole-of-life system that allows individual animals to be identified electronically and tracked from property of birth to slaughter, for food safety, product integrity and market access purposes.

The investigation of the histories, pedigrees, purity of type of sheep registered or entered for registration.
